Everything You Wanted to Know About Consulting but Were Afraid to Ask - The Institute

Great article about some important things a consultant should know to thrive in this environment. In here the panelists talk about the procedure of marketing, the management of earnings, the trial and error of rates and the long haul that a consultant should follow. About this long haul in consulting Larry G. Nelson say the following,
"One of the worst things I see is when someone loses their job, they say they’re a consultant rather than saying they’re unemployed."
For some people this become there modus operandi and everything they do is for the goal of getting a full time job. This is one of the most important not to do things of how to be a good consultant but not everyone has the knowledge of it and fall into this.

  1. Very interesting article. I might add that the underlining message there, is not that it's wrong, but rather to encourage professionals in that scenario to embrace the opportunity and treat consulting as their profession. This way, more opportunities will present themselves, and consulting will become their full time job.

    In the end, your reputation and integrity are what will determine your success as a consultant. All you’ve got is your word, and your integrity. It takes just one negative comment to cancel out dozens of positive comments, if not hundreds.
